BARRY JONES
Full Moon Nocturnal Painting by Barry Jones
"The Brentford Art Gallery" was made to exhibit a large collection of paintings by Barry Jones who died in 1998. Barry Jones lived the later
part of his life in Brentford, was a talented musician by profession and a painter.

While Barry traded mostly with copies of Van Gogh paintings or Modiglani's he also found his own
distinctive style whilst painting local canal scenes.
Night Lock by Barry Jones
Like Vincent, Barry would use strong colours and in addition to this he would scratch, scrape
and even gouge his boards in order to bring the thought he was carrying, into permanence, for us to witness in this reality.

The Brentford Gallery has over 20 of his original works which will be on display. If you
come to visit you will find that Barry would paint on anything he could find, scrap plywood,
blockboard or fibreboard - as long as it could hold paint, it was of use. Paints were often household
emulsion paints as this was the cheapest liquid coloured medium that he could find. He would also make
crude frames as in the example of the Female Swimmer or Night Lock above, or he would leave a border
on the actual board he was painting on, and then paint this as the frame, as in the Full Moon at the top of this page.
Iron Bridge by Barry Jones
While I catogorised Barry's work as being naive is is not used in a way to demean his
effort as Barry's ability to embrace reflection, does in my opinion surpass what might be
expected by naive painter, and his nocturnal paintings with their full moons, complete with
a mystery woman standing in the silence of the night do have a tangible surreal feeling to them.
It is for this reason that we felt Barry Jones justly deserves to have a permanent gallery so that his
work could be accessible to the public.
Brentford Lock by Barry Jones
It is our intention to exhibit Barry Jones' artworks in the future. It will be during this time that the art installation will manifest itself because as well as
the Jones paintings ondisplay there will be an additional work of art which will bind the Gallery and artwork
together to transform it into an art installation titled "The Brentford Art Gallery" , this
will then be a classic example of Ouroborous - when the serpent eats its own tail- as here
you will be able to witness an art gallery eating itself as it will be an intrinsic part of its own exhibition.
The Magritte Shed by Barry Jones
The Brentford Gallery will exhibit Barry Jones' artwork three times a year, and at other times the gallery be available for hire for one man/group shows. In addition to this the Hall will be available for Hire for workshops/seminars rehearsals etc.
Not only are Barry Jones' paintings surreal, but it does seem odd indeed that a backwater known as Brentford
should at last have its own art gallery! Missed out by the underground tube network, sacked by Prince Rupert as a
knee jerk reaction to losing out to a small skirmish at Turnham Green, Brentford has always been thought of
a drive thru, on route to the West or when heading into London, But this is simply not the case Brentford
has a lot going for itself, not only does it have the Thames as one of its boundaries,
but in addition to this is its canal system, classic Butts village, its crude 'Pink Willie'
monument and now after some 2000 years of civilisation....an Art Gallery, well not
exactly, the art gallery is not actually an art gallery as it is actually what is
known in the artworld as an 'art installation' , consequently this art installation
is called "The Brentford Art Gallery", and because the Gallery is actually
its own exhibit then what you will find at 'The Brentford
Art Gallery' when you visit , is a classic example
of Ouroborous - when the serpent eats its own
tail- as here you will be able to witness an
art gallery eating itself as it will be
an intrinsic part of its own
exhibition, consequently, if you
fully embrace the art
installation is a gallery at
the same time it is an
installation then you
may well join
the serpent
in its
continual
chase of
its own
tail.......
